Instructions Installation for Atlas Browser Software
Several Java applets have been developed to present the Zebrafish Atlas data on the internet. Both require that the Java plug-in is installed on your system. To be able to view the 3D reconstruction, the Java3D extension must be installed as well.
The Java plug-in (version 1.4 or higher) is available for Windows, most Unix versions (including Linux & Mac OS X) and several other operating systems. For Mac OS X it is advised to use Safari as your browser. If you are using Mac OS X prior version 10.1, it might be necessary to use the appletviewer.
Installation instructions
First you need to install:
the Java Virtual Machine 1.4.x.
Then you need to install:
the Java3D 1.3.1 (either DirectX or OpenGL version), this is used with Java 1.4.
the Mac OS X version can be found at apple.com.
For Java 1.3, you need Java3D 1.2, which can be found here:
the Java3D 1.2 DirectX (4.6MB) or
the Java3D 1.2 OpenGL (2.5MB) software.
There is no Java3D version 1.2 for Mac OS X, so you will have to use the Java 1.4 + Java3D 1.3.1 combination on Safari.
If the graphics adaptor in your PC has support for OpenGL it is advised that you use the OpenGL version.
For new versions check Sun's plug-in and Java3D website.
For the Java3D software for Linux go to Blackdown's website.
If you have succesfully installed both plugins it is advised to reboot your PC. After reboot come back to this page and try the applets to view or review the data that are available (and will become available) in the 3D-atlas. For Mac OS X, the applets have been tested with Mac OS X 10.3.1 and Safari, default installations of Internet Explorer appear to use Java 1.3 even if 1.4 is installed (which breaks the applets). The construction of the 3D view can take a rather long time, please be patient.

The performance of the Java applets can be improved by allocating more memory to the Java Runtime in the Java Plugin Control Panel. In the 'Basic' tabpane enter parameters at the 'Java Runtime Parameters' inputfield:
- -Xms6m : to specify the initial memory allocation size (here 6 Mb). Default value is 2 Mb.
- -Xmx120m : to specify the maximum allocation size (here 120 Mb). Default is 64 Mb.
